the purchase of a vehicle is an important multi-factorial decision. while some small details may differ between different people, the most common factors are usually price, customer service, customer satisfaction and getting the most ‘bang’ for your ‘buck’. i’ve recently been in the market to purchase a new vehicle. at some point i was decided on a mazda3, until the salesmen decided to not keep their word; which pushed me towards purchasing a toyota. what i’ve learned from a process that took almost two months?
- do your homework at home and get informed about the cars that fit your budget, dealership ratings, current promotions, and more. some sites that i recommend are: car buying tips, inside car secrets, and edmunds.
- visit a few dealerships and obtain some quotes, obtain some business cards and hopefully get something in writing
- don’t trust anyone that works at the dealership to keep their word
- if you have a promise of theirs in writing make sure to keep them to it
- don’t be afraid to use email as a tool of negotiation
- an offer on the phone leads to a case of salesman amnesia
- rudeness and shadiness during any communication with a salesman should ring an alarm
- no question is a stupid questions when it comes with dealing with anyone from a dealership
- ensure the promised included items in the deal are provided, if not do not hesitate to question them
- last, but very important, don’t be afraid to share your experience with your friends, the customer department of the car company, and others
thus, considering the availability of information on the internet it is inexcusable if one is unprepared. the information is there, one just has to spend the time to search for it and read it.
