a wrong turn

i’m certain most will agree that a wrong turn most times will lead to some sort of a regrettable occurrence. of course, that would depend on what kind of occurrences one considers regrettable. well, last night, as i was heading towards hwy 1 trying to make it home at a ‘decent’ hour, i mistakenly entered the hwy and headed eastbound. well, i was intending to head westbound to actually get home. realizing to late that i’m about to head towards ‘india’ (surrey for those of you who are not aware with the gvrd), had no choice in the matter anymore and pressed the gas heading for the first exit so that i can turn around and go home.

get off the hwy on the first exit, make somewhat of an ‘legal’ u-turn and head back towards the hwy. fully aware that i have to head westbound, i correctly identify the lane leading towards it. suddenly all i see is a long line-up of cars, essentially stopped, waiting, as yours truly, to enter hwy 1. well it’s saturday night, about 11:45pm by then, and in order to enter the hwy you had to pass, successfully, through a road block by surrey’s finest. who would have thought, road block, saturday night in surrey. good thing was that i didn’t drink, well didn’t drink alcohol that is. bad thing, wasted 30 more minutes before i had my chance to answer ‘no’ to the officer’s question of ‘any alcohol tonight?’.

on my way, no major upsetting news, however quite a good laugh between myself and my sister. considering a small ‘detour’ could have in the end meant quite a long night.

happy to be alive

well, it’s true. as i was walking toward my office in the morning from my car, i figured it’s just after 6am, so i’m ‘safer’ if i stick to the side-walk and cross the streets on the crosswalks. well, for the most part at least that offers a feeling of safety. as i’m about to cross, on the crosswalk, i see as this car fails to stop at the stop sign from the 4-way and is heading in my direction. i’m about half-way on the crosswalk and the first instinct is…to stop. i stop and just look at him to see if he’s ‘sleeping’ or simply ‘dumb’. he brakes and allows me to continue on my path to cross the street.

what can i say, 1 pedestrian, 1 car before the sun is even up and they eventually find a way to cross paths. i guess i have to be a bit more ‘careful’ and actually keep my eyes open. oh wait, i was actually aware, he failed to realize he had a stop sign prior to entering the intersection. i guess rules are meant to be broken, especially when you know ‘big brother’ is nowhere to be found.

this also reminds me of another time i almost got sandwiched between two cars. the summer of 1998, crossing a pretty major street in burnaby. red lights one way, and green for pedestrians. i start crossing the street, as i see a car going a bit too fast given the driver had a red light. no cars in front of her, and my path is set to meet up with the car. realizing that it’s probably gonna hurt me more than it’s gonna hurt the car, i did stop. the driver didn’t, ran the red light, t-boned a car and came to a stop. i look back, my sister is a bit in disbelief, my dad is sort of searching for words and then i look forward again, as 2m in front of me the woman driver that just ran the red light is already on her phone. the other driver, well she had back, neck and head pains already. so i guess i should stick to driving as crossing streets on foot for me is quite unsafe.

when technology bites

as i was ‘riding’ in style on the bus to school today i ran across a news article in the province newspaper (yes given free of charge prior to boarding the sky-train) about a wannabe stunt artist. biker from england decides to post his bike ride, with the usual flavored stunts, on youtube, only to be picked up by police who use the youtube clip to jail the biker for 3 months.

we’ve all seen the long list of speeding videos on youtube, some are quite impressive. high speeds, crazy stunts, but this one definitely bites. not only does his own video land him some jail time, but apparently when the police (who at that point were unaware of the online video) arrived at the biker’s house he decides to just spill the beans about the video. really, how dumb must one be to not only dig his own hole with the online posting but push himself in willingly. we all speed, but i’m willing to be most of us tend to shy away from setting up evidence that could land us some punishment. guess boys will always be boys and will keep looking for ways to show their worth.
