new decade means new driving law

at the beginning of the new decade bc drivers had to do a quick update in regards to what they’re allowed to do while at the wheel of a vehicle. the use of a cellphone, mp3 or any other handheld devices if strictly prohibited while driving. however, just like any other law made by man there are just as many exceptions to the law as there are grammar exceptions in the English language. most important ones are, and this only applies to full driver license holders, you can talk on the phone if you are using a hands free device or if it is an emergency then feel free to use the handheld device.

overall, i agree that while driving one should concentrate on driving and only driving. so, in order to ensure safety on the road i will agree with stricter laws. however, hiding behind the pretext of implementing a change for safety but coming up with a half-assed law should not be allowed. talking on the cellphone is definitely a problem and has been shown to distract drivers while driving. the problem with it…the talking. being involved in a conversation while driving will distract one from being in the fullest state of alert. the conversation itself is the problem. fair enough if you argue that having one hand on the phone is also a problem, but it’s no the only one. if you focus on talking, even if it is on a hand less device, you are still not fully concentrating on the road. so while handheld device and talking are most likely worst than talking by itself; it’s still the talking that takes the huge chunk of the issue. anyhow…the idea of the law is great, the law itself is simply stupid. not sure of what they were smoking when they came up with it, but they should share with the rest of us. if in research we would conclude using the same logic we’d still be in the dark ages.

at this point, i’d like to know how they will address the other bigger problems and causes of lack of attention while driving? things like:

  • putting on make-up
  • eating
  • smoking
  • reading a book
  • having a pet in your lap while you drive
  • drinking (not alcohol) while driving
  • etc…

how and when will they truly address these issues? how is one supposed to drive properly while they hold their ‘rat’ size puddle in their lap? or is a moving animal in the front seat not considered to be a potential hazard? eating and drinking while driving, i guess that’s ok; yet if a law is developed to address this then mcdonald’s will not supply lunch at the office for them anymore. i guess someone had to increase sales profits on bluetooth devices (or bluetooth like devices) and thus…we get the cellphone law.

4 months…and counting

well about this time 4 months ago i had my first morning coffee without a smoke. i had smoked for a few years by that point…and after strong considerations (and inputs from some) decided to not light up anymore. essentially the decision was taken about a month before, and i pretty much set a date when i was gonna quit. thinking that will help reduce the smoking and it will be easier. well, i smoked more as the days were counting down…but the decision was made…so on the 6th of november i didn’t light up in the morning…and instead drank my coffee while watching the morning news.

as mentioned a few months ago, i didn’t finish my last pack of smokes…and two were left in the pack. i did place it on my desk…and to this day the two smokes are still in the pack…waiting early for me to give them some attention. i decided not to use any sort of medication or any replacements….you could say i did it cold turkey. 4 months have passed…and i won’t lie…cravings came and went. some stronger than others…depending on the day, depending on the activities…and yes even on the weather. sunny warm weather, begging one to go for a walk or outside for some fresh air…well cravings kicked in. and they kicked in quite heavily. however…to this day i managed not to give in to temptation and suppress the cravings…which i’m fully aware at this point that they will never go away…and from time to time they will pay me a little visit…

why did i decide not to use any sort of medication help…essentially it’s because i have a hard time accepting that they will not have some sort of an unwanted secondary effect (those can range, vary and can be multiple). anyhow, to each his own i guess…but i wanted essentially to believe i can do it by ambition alone, quite selfish i guess…but so far it’s working. to those that want to use medication…my only thing to say is…talk to your doctor…as they should be well informed as to the side-effects and if the particular product is ok for you.

where to smoke?

pretty soon it seems that a tool that can detect ’smoking allowed’ places will be a hot item ‘flying’ off the shelf. it seems if health authorities in bc have their way…we soon will have the following ’smoke free places’: beaches, playing fields, and other common grounds. at this point smoking is not allowed on patios…not allowed within 3 meters from a door and within some ‘n’ meters from an intake to a building…to just name a few…now, i quit smoking a while ago…and no just in case you’re wondering i’m not planing to start again…but isn’t this perhaps a bit excessive…given that apparently in 2009…within gvrd the prevalence rate of smoking is roughly 13% (15yrs and older included). even according to some sources that are behind this movement…the decrease in smoking seems to have stabilized…

on top of that, the olympics (yes 2010 olympics) are being promoted as ’smoke-free’…what that means – smoking will not be allowed at, in or around any olympic venues…more…the celebration sites are to be ’smoke-free’ – yes that includes outdoor celebration sites…enjoy!

a small note on the price of tabacoo…a piece of information i had the pleasure of reading a few months ago estimated that it costs a tabacoo company roughly around $2/pack to produce…what’s the cost of a pack where you shop?

so, i ask…shouldn’t they put their efforts and our money to better use? how about a few more ‘minor’ issues…that seem to pop up rather every day?
