high security at yvr

recently i had the pleasure of traveling north-bound on vacation in order to visit some old friends and enjoy what nature has to offer at footsteps from the north pole. anyhow, the decision was to travel by plane, after-all driving 2000 kms is not always a desired thing to do. by this point i am assuming you all know where this is heading, yes something to do with a company that managed to annoy me. well in this case i decided to travel with air canada. the only reason as to why, was because due to some parental help i had a code for 5% discount for the flight. at the time, air canada was trying to fight back west jet (and west jet’s offer of matching the price of a discounted fare if purchased earlier). thinking i am somewhat covered, i figured why not. well i purchased two tickets (round-trip) from vancouver to yellowknife.

about 3 weeks later i noticed the price decreased in total about $250. well, quite a big decrease. so, i decided to see if they were true to their word and if they will match the new price. i called them and left a voice-mail, as it was quite hard to get a customer rep. anyhow, they did eventually call back (about 2 days later), to inform me that the ticket is non-refundable, which means i can’t even try to get a re-fund, lose some part of the ticket and buy the new ones. essentially, i got told tough luck. i tried arguing, and telling that west jet offers this thing, but of course they had the clause ‘non-refundable’. so be it, i figured it doesn’t matter, so might as well fly with them. after all, it’s likely it will be the last time given west jet does seem to at least pretend they take better care for their customers. thus, they did essentially lose a customer that actually flies a few times a year.

anyhow, long story shorter…on the day of the flight we leave for the airport by bus/sky-train (yes, we decided to try the new crappy line). overall, the crappy line did impress, given it was direct to the airport and made it quite easy. no major complains about it (except the dumb rationale used to design the stations, especially the one at yvr – given the order of ticket machines do not make sense). overall, good idea, but dumb way of managing the project. anyhow, we get to yvr quite rapidly and get in line to get our tickets. all goes well, and we get to the security check point. put the carry-ons through the x-ray machine, and walk through the metal detector. my significant other passes first, and the metal detector beeps. the guys with his portable metal detector decides to check her over, and around the hips the detector beeps. she was wearing a pair of jeans (and you all know the jeans have the metal parts that might beep). anyhow, beeps once and the security guy calls for help from a female guard who confirms my significant other is only wearing jeans. well, the guy checks again on the other hip with his metal detector, which beeps again. and again he asks for help. overall the thing beeped 3 times, around the same area…and he wasn’t bright enough to realize it’s the jeans (given they were tight on the legs). kind of makes you wonder what kind of test these puppets in uniform have to go through prior to getting hired (given they are allowed in restricted and secure areas). anyhow, we get on the first plane, the second…and we arrive in yellowknife.

after a week and a half, we get to the yellowknife airport and go directly to the ticket desk. hand in our passports, at which point i notice the young lady across the counter turn to her fellow employee and whisper something to her. essentially on her lips i noticed ‘it’s expired’, and seeing how she had my passport in hand…i quickly interrupt. as it turns out i took the wrong passport (the old one) with me to fly. not quite something smart on my part, but overall given it was in canada i would have been ok. anyhow, essentially i passed through five different points where my passport was checked and was allowed to proceed, until the sixth where a young 20 some girl noticed. give her credit, she was new at the job…perhaps that’s why she paid attention. the woman at the air canada desk at yvr did not notice the expire date on my passport was 2007, she gave me the ticket…did not warn me, notice me or tell me to present another piece of id. the pre-security screen check took a look at the boarding passes and the passport and let me proceed to the security point at yvr. the horny puppet at the security point was causing so much of a scene with the beeps and request for help that nobody bothered to check the details on my passport…so i was allowed to proceed. the girl at the entry to the plane did not notice and neither did the one in calgary. so, overall i passed through 5 points where my passport was checked and nobody noticed i was traveling with an expired passport.

well it’s good to know that the girl that noticed the expire date was extremely enthusiastic and essentially proceeded to state that this ‘made her day’, but that got me wondering…yvr is an international airport. the same airport where security did not notice that a man was hanging around aimlessly for almost 10 hours two years ago, prior to calling the cops who proceed to kill him through electrocution within 60 seconds from arriving. makes you wonder the level of security in the airport that is supposed to protect the travels coming to the next olympiad. given the winter olympics are coming to this boring city, i was hoping for a higher sense of security from the airport hosting the games and from the ‘official’ airline of the 2010 olympics. overall, it was 7am so i guess the customer rep at the counter was too tired…then again seems quite easy to obtain a ticket with a ‘fake’ (fake since it was expired for 2 years) piece of id and proceed to the security check. not to mention that the security puppets at the security check where things are supposed to be caught in case they are not proper, are more interested in staring at an ass and holding back a girl, make her spin a few times…so that their security cameras can get a good view every part of her body…given she had her sweater raised so that her jeans were visible. that to me seems more or less like sexual harassment, but if one complains…one will only label oneself for further detail checks when traveling through this secure airport. can one blame a horny security puppet, or perhaps should one question the ones responsible for hiring these lack for professionalism security guards. if this is how they secure the airport, i wonder what other things they have missed.

the other check points, well it’s clear they only check the name…not anything else. after-all if the main security check allowed the person to pass…then they must be in order. level of security at the yvr, quite poor. level of shameless acts, quite high. it was quite surprising to see that security misses a person hanging around for hours in an apparent secure area, but after the latest trip through yvr…makes you wonder what caught the attention of the security puppets. one can only hope they will raise their level within the next 4 months, if not…we’re in for perhaps a few ugly surprises…

you call yourself a fan?

a while ago i came across a blog post in regards to sport supporters and the way they show and/or manifest their ‘love’ and/or ‘admiration’ to the respective bunch of over-paid ‘professionals’ that go out on a field (indoor or outdoor) and perform. performance in front of ‘n’ number of screaming spectators is nothing new to society…afterall one of the world’s wonders is the colosseum in rome (given we’ve ‘evolved’ in the type of sports now occurring). well, one would certainly hope that we value life a bit more than seeing it destroyed for pure entertainment in front of thousands of screaming paying customers. now, leaving bull-fighting and other such sports aside, most of the arena sports now are promoted as ‘fair-play’. while lives are not taken inside the arena…the practice seems to have transferred outside. as i opened up my laptop this morning, the first news was about a group of irish ‘supporters’ of a team called rangers (yes…i’m fully aware who they are) that have decide to celebrate in ‘style’ the most recent achievement of their idols. as it turns out, the rangers have won the scottish football championship. keep in mind…for the last ‘n’ number of years…that championship has been played between two teams…the rangers and celtic. it’s either one of the two that wins every year…and every year they do it with a margin of at least 10 or more points…ahead of the 3rd place team. now, these supporters decide to celebrate the fact that their team managed to finish first by take bats…going for a spin in the car…and pray on the first person they see…they essentially took a life, and injured two in their ‘celebration‘. to add insult to injury…as it turns out…religion was brought into this…the ‘fans’ were protestants (one really does stand and wonder…) and the victims were roman catholic.

not quite sure where to begin in stating my opinion on this…the team ‘wins’ a championship played between two teams (it’s a 50% chance of getting it right in september if you bet on either of the two winning)…and these ‘supporters’ decide to celebrate by taking action into their hands…showing their support and ‘admiration’ for the team they ‘cheer’ for by deliberately taking life. now, while it’s quite obvious that regardless the punishment (if they all do get caught) received (even if it is life in jail…yes i fully believe they deserve life in jail for this), they most likely won’t that devastated. as they have shown their forever ‘love’ to their team. so besides jail time, why not hit them where it hurts (and while i know this won’t happen…simply because this sort of actions usually don’t occur). thus, in my humble opinion…i think first the football federation in northern ireland should…hit the fans and hit them hard. by this, i mean strip away the title from rangers (not fair?…why not…it’s the only thing the ‘fans’ will actually be devasted by) and while you’re at it…make sure they don’t represent northern ireland in europe next year…and demote the team to the second league for a few years. let’s see how that quiets down the so called ‘fans’?

how will this actually hit the fans? well, they will see that their actions have hurt the team they support. their actions resulted in their team being punished. the team itself, well in all due respect, the players got their money…for playing. and continuing to play and demand they are not responsible…i have one question to them: would they want to continue playing for ‘fans’ that will go out and intentionally hurt other fans as a sign of ‘devotion’ for them? the owners, i’m certain they will be devasted, given the profit they will have to give up give this punishment…but let’s face it…if they start taking actions and start promoting betters ways to support them team…i’m sure it won’t go overlooked. but then again…i’m not talking profit so they won’t listen.

what should the team do…and yes, i’m fully aware this is impossible too…? well, they can for one try to promote less violent ways of supporting the team. try to reach out to their supporters…as they will listen. if not, at least they are taking action…which at this point i don’t recall any professional team in the world doing. i don’t think i’ve seen any commercials started from a sports team to promote a reduction in violence by their supporters (and no, violence by supporters does not only occur in football…recall the lakers’ supporters a few years back? the vancouver canucks supporters in 1994?, and so on).

another body that can take action…well that’s the politicians…they can get involved…sports are parts of the country…thus they have a responsibility to get involved if sports or actions due to sports promote violence and/or put the population at risk. they should pressure the football federation to take action…take action to ensure this does not occur again…

last i recall, the current uefa president is promoting zero tolerance against racism…need i say more? a person was killed for two reasons…being a fan of a different team (or at least thought to be a fan of a different team) and being present in a roman catholic neighbourhood (it’s assumed he was roman catholic). i’m sure each alone are enough to consider this a racist action…what will uefa do about this? probably nothing…and that’s too bad. because at this point…if uefa was true to its word about ‘zero tolerance’ they should take action. ban the rangers from european competition…put pressure on norther ireland to take action and reduce violence or suffer more consequence. and it’s not as if this wasn’t done before…recall the 1990s? england was banned from international competition for five years due to violence by the ‘fans’. so, it’s not as if there is no precedent to this.

so, hit the ‘fans’ where it hurts, and hit them hard. punish them as well as the teams they support. make it understood that supporting team does not imply violence….does not promote violence. by not taking action, it can simply been seen that the actions of these ‘fans’ are accepted…too bad this won’t happen, and nothing will be done to prevent such senseless actions from occurring again. i’m shocked that they are calling themselves ‘fans’…sports are there to entertain and provide a way for the followers to relax…not to add extra burden to society…

careful where you eat…

it’s been a while since i posted anything…given various random things that have occurred, but at least i think this post is quite worth it. recently a new swept through north america. this one deserves a place in the ‘you’re dumber than you look’ category and also…the ‘you did it to yourself’. as it seems, not only were some domino employees dumb enough to tape their tampering with food (in other words…creating evidence)…they had the bright idea of posting it on youtube. this really deserves a new level of stupidity and/or foolishness. they essentially created the evidence that not only got them fired (in a ‘crisis filled society’…they decide to fire themselves), but apparently they might face some jail time. really wish that there were some awards similar to the ‘darwin awards‘, but for alive fools that can’t figure out a dumber way to get fired, but also spent some time behind bars. need i remind you of the fool from england that taped himself speeding, posted it on youtube and then that was used against him (fine, licence suspended, etc.). nice going…what can i say, some just can’t figure out how to get in jail faster…here’s an idea…just try to join the darwin awards…save us the embarrassment of being group with you in the same category (humans).

so, as a friend of mine said a few days back..sometimes you really do not want to know what goes on behind the scenes in restaurants. shocking, but true (to some extent). i would like to know what goes on behind the scenes…it will help me decide where to eat. a nice initiative has been started by vancouver coastal health (awesome job), which posts information about inspections to food establishments, information about license suspensions and the reasons as well as the length. enjoy…and read it with care.

on the same topic, i ended up in a ‘club’ on saturday. it’s called the crush champagne lounge, it’s on granville streets (with davie) in downtown vancouver. during my trips to use the facilities i ended up observing some rather disgusting behaviour. the ones involved, a bartender, a bus boy and a body-guard. each one of them on separate occasions. they used the facility, and simply walked out. yes, you got it…without washing their hands. now, i was about to essentially go and talk to someone about it…but eventually gave up (perhaps next time). however, the next day i did email the manager of the establishment and shared my opinion about…their lack of training about personal hygiene, about the fact that they are putting their customers’ health at risk, it’s disgusting, and more. i truly wonder if they don’t spent time training their staff about this…i wonder how good they train their staff about other aspects of health and safety.

the manager did reply, within 10 minutes, to my email…and did state he will bring this up to the next meeting. also he made sure to mention that there are 3 sinks (with soap) and a hand sanitizer behind the bar (sure, awesome…completely useless if they are not used). however, it was appreciated that he did pay attention, was polite and did respond.

however, quite disgusting knowing they do not wash their hands…serve drinks…and essentially serve you…so keep your eyes open…and don’t be afraid to complain.
